Implantable Middle Ear Devices -- Update

  • Pittsburgh Ear Associates offers the newest implantable technologies available as alternatives to conventional hearing aids. The Bone Anchored (BAHA) device is available for individuals with chronic middle or external ear problems which prevent them from being able to wear a standard earpiece in the ear canal. It can also be utilized as a bone anchored CROS type device for people with single sided deafness (SSD). This type of surgery and implant is not yet routinely covered by insurance and would have to be reviewed for pre-approval prior to surgery.

Envoy Totally Implantable Hearing System – We expect Phase II of this clinical trial to begin in the next six months. This device is not yet FDA approved but could be an alternative option for moderate to severely hearing impaired individuals who are dissatisfied with their current hearing aids. Very strict selection criteria must be met to be considered for this study. If interested, feel free to speak with the research coordinator (Renee Garvin at 412-359-6690) for more details.
