PEA physicians Moisés Arriaga, MD and Douglas Chen, MD, direct the Allegheny General Hearing and Balance Center which features advanced balance evaluation. Dizziness, vertigo, imbalance and lightheadedness are all symptoms which can be very uncomfortable and disabling. Determining the exact cause is the most important factor in obtaining relief.
Specialized testing is available to quantify the different components of the balance system:
Computerized Rotational testing is helpful is in determining whether the symptoms are from the inner ear or brain balance centers.
ENG testing determines the extent of inner ear weakness. Infrared Video Hallpike testing records eye movements in a darkened environment to confirm the diagnosis of positional vertigo.
Posture platform testing identifies when and how balance problems occur so that therapy can be designed to overcome these symptoms.
Electrocochleography can confirm the diagnosis of Meniere’s disease while Auditory Brainstem Response testing can identify brain causes of dizziness.
MRI scans are frequently used to rule neurological or tumor causes of dizziness.
Balance symptoms can be caused by many conditions, and testing is the best way to identify the cause.
