Acoustic Neuroma is a benign tumor of the lining of the balance nerve (vestibular Schwannoma). The tumor does not spread to other parts of the body. Instead, this growth causes symptoms by pressing on other nerves and stealing their blood supply. Pittsburgh Ear Physicians have managed over 700 patients with acoustic neuroma, or acoustic tumors. We feel very strongly that a patient's management should be individulized based on the patient's preference, tumor size, and medical status. While safe tumor removal and facial function preservation remain the top priorities, we have developed new techniques for hearing preservation in acoustic neuroma surgery. With modern techniques and collaborative approaches, hearing preservation rates are over 80% for certain tumor categories.
