The fiber optic argon laser is being increasingly used by PEA surgeons to restore hearing in cases of inadequate vibration by the ossicular chain. By using these specialized microsurgical techniques our surgeons can atraumatically remove scar tissue which binds the tiny hearing bones. Similarly, in micro laser stapedectomy, a small window can be created into the inner ear without unnecessarily disrupting the inner ear fluids. In this way hearing can be efficiently restored with a minimal risk to the nerve of hearing and balance.
The clearest impact of the laser in our middle ear surgery is that the overwhelming majority of patients are discharged on the same day when the laser is used in stapedectomy in contrast to an overnight stay to control postoperative dizziness and nausea in many non-laser cases.
Our newest applications use the laser to vaporize chronic infections and cholesteatoma to prevent recurrence of this persistent condition.
