Hearing Aids: Why? When? Which one?

For many patients with hearing loss, hearing aids offer an excellent solution to their day-to-day communication needs. Hearing aids have come a long way with the explosion of digital and computer technology and sizes varying from tiny to traditional behind-the-ear models. Satisfaction with hearing aids requires two elements: 1) careful fitting with the right technology and style and 2)appropriate counseling in how to really learn the appropriate use of the device. Unfortuntely, many hearing aids are not useful to the patient and have become decorations in the sock drawer at home. Appropriate fitting requires a complete diagnostic audiogram and physical examination to assure there is not an underlying medical condition or surgical solution to the hearing loss. Then a detailed, personal evalution to decide on the type of amplification, sound processing and style are necessary. Finally, the patient must be given a one month trial to see if the device is right for them.
