Meniere’s Disease, Endolymphatic Hydrops, is an inner ear disease that produces fluctuating hearing loss and attacks of dizziness. At Pittsburgh Ear we find that 80% of patients are adequately treated with medications and diet alone. When additional treatment is needed, widening the space around the endolymph fluid sac in the mastoid can stop the dizzy spells in most patients.
Pittsburgh Ear’s 2001 research fellow, Dr. Luis Nieto and Dr. Moisés Arriaga have completed a detailed summary of hearing results after these drainage procedures. Patients who received the procedure, called endolymphatic sac decompression, had significantly more frequent hearing improvement than patients managed with medications alone.
Dr. Arriaga notes, “This preliminary result is exciting because up to now no other treatment had been shown to produce hearing improvement in Meniere’s Disease and Hydrops.” We continue to monitor the long-term results of our treatments to improve the care for such chronic conditions as Meniere’s Disease.
