NEW SURGICALLY IMPLANTABLE HEARING AID

New strategies are available for patients with hearing loss who require amplification. While hearing aids have advanced significantly with the advent of digital signal processing and computerized amplification strategies, new innovations are available. During the summer, the FDA approved a new partially implantable hearing aid. This device offers clearer sound without the feedback of traditional hearing aids. The device, called SOUNDTECH, works by having a tiny magnetic disk implanted between two of the hearing bones in a minor surgical procedure. In this way the inner ear receives sound in a very efficient manner. This hearing aid still requires the wearer to use an external device. Pittsburgh Ear is very involved in the new implantable hearing aid devices. We offer both approved partially implanted devices. In early 2002 we begin clinical trials of a new totally implanted device —– PEA has been selected as one of only two sites nationwide.
