Positional Vertigo is the most common cause of adult spinning dizziness. This condition is benign and easily treated in over 90% of patients. Accurate diagnosis is necessary because serious conditions can masquerade as benign positional dizziness. In a recent review of cases of positional dizziness, Pittsburgh Ear’s 2000 research fellow,Dr. Maria del Rio and PEA staff Dr. Moisés Arriaga identified important causes of positional vertigo. By identifying the cause, recurrence of positional vertigo can be avoided. Based on these important research findings, Pittsburgh Ear now treats both the symptoms of positional vertigo and the underlying cause. With special balance testing the reason for the vertigo can usually be identified and also treated. If positional dizziness persists for more than a month, specialized testing is important to rule out possible serious causes of the symptoms such as tumors, viral infections, or even Meniere’s disease. For most patients, office treatment maneuvers followed by home exercises such as the Brandt-Daroff procedures in the illustration are effective treatment.
