Treatment of Dizziness and Imbalance

Medical Therapy: A wide array of medical treatments are available for patients with dizziness and related symptoms. Treatments include diet management, diretics, vasodilator therapy, steroid therapy, and neuroactive medications. Particle repositioning head maneuvers and even physical therapy are effective for certain causes of dizziness. When medicines are not adequate, the surgeries listed below may be used.

Endolymphatic Sac Surgery: The sac, which drains inner-ear fluids, may be decompressed or drained into the mastoid to alleviate dizziness or hearing loss from Meniere's disease.

Vestibular Nerve Section: In severe cases of vertigo, removing the diseased balance nerve as it enters the ear is effective at stopping the attacks.

Labyrinthectomy: In patients without useful hearing in the diseased ear, surgical removal of the inner ear balance canals is extremely effective for the vertigo attacks.

Transtympanic Gentamycin: This office treatment for severe vertigo is about 80% effective for the vertigo attacks but carries a 20% chance of total hearing loss.
